Who is Kid’s First?

Kids First Communication Services Inc. is an Alberta based company committed to excellence in the provision of individual and group services for children with severe disabilities and their families. Kids First was created in response to the significant clinical needs experienced by children and families in Edmonton and the surrounding areas. As the Family Support for Children with Disabilities (FSCD) Act was proclaimed (August 2004), Kids First was contracted to provide an array of services to meet these needs. The FSCD Act is intended to provide family-centred services focusing on the child's developmental needs as well as the family in supporting the child. Kids First provides services Monday to Saturday 8 am - 6 pm however we may be able to be flexible to accommodate specific programming needs.

Services We Provide

The provision of specialized services and corresponding methods of operations involves but is not limited to the following:

  • Liaising with FSCD personnel
  • Preparing initial documentation and service plans
  • Participating in MDT panel reviews (both new and ongoing requests)
  • Submitting budgets for approval
  • Managing funds as services are provided
  • Screening, hiring, employing & subcontracting team members
  • Conducting assessments and probes to determine therapy goals
  • Developing Individual Program Plans (in collaboration with team members)
  • Providing individualized in-home, clinic and community family support & training
  • Organizing and chairing regular team meetings
  • Conducting Parent Skill Building sessions
  • Educating parents and staff on typical development, the characteristics of disordered populations, and prognostic indicators
  • Assisting families in connecting with external community resources and programs
  • Assisting parents with transition planning and points of change in service
  • Encouraging and coordinating contact with other families living with children with special needs
  • Liaising with community professionals involved with the family and child when appropriate (i.e. Pediatrician, school personnel)

Kids First Communication Services Inc. has designed all of its programs and services to meet the follow goals:

Families will experience an increased sense of competency and control over their own lives

Children will develop positive social relationships and increased independence in normal activities of daily living

3)

Kids First team members will maintain a positive work environment that exemplifies integrity, professionalism, respect for others and a high standard of continuing competency
